2023: Nesting record

Spring 2023, nesting season again at Maison Hina.
It began quietly and ended with six chicks fledging safely.

Incubation doesn't begin in earnest until the last egg is laid. This means hatching happens close together, and all the chicks develop at roughly the same pace.

19 March

Nest building begins

The first moss arrives in the nest box. The season begins quietly.

2 April

🥚 First egg

First egg confirmed. The story begins again for another year.

2–9 April

Egg laying

One egg per day, reaching 8 eggs in total by 9 April.

9 April

Last egg & incubation begins

The 8th egg. Full incubation now underway. The hatching countdown starts from this date.

21 April

🐣 Hatching

Around 12 days after the last egg, the first chick hatched. The others followed shortly after.

Late April

🐥 Peak feeding

The parents made frequent trips with food, and the chicks' calls grew stronger day by day.

9 May

👋 Fledging

All chicks fledged safely between 15:50 and 17:00 — around 18 days after hatching, textbook timing.

In the end, 6 chicks hatched and fledged safely in 2023.
